Strolling through the
streets of cities and towns of the Netherlands,
England, Germany or Denmark, we look around and admire
houses, cottages and office buildings with a clinker facade. When we look a little lower, we can
see the clinker also on the streets, sidewalks, squares and in the gardens. Interestingly arranged clinker
pavement, often cleverly combined with granite or wood, gives the places a
unique elegance and charm. It is
hard to believe that in many cases it is there for decades or even hundreds of
years, because it still looks like new. We
dream about making our city, our street and our garden look like ...

Fortunately, not only do
we dream, but more and more often we begin to use these patterns and
experiences in practice. We attach
more and more importance to the durability of products, their practicality and
elegance. That's why we replace
gray, concrete and crumbled surfaces with natural material, resistant to
weather conditions and almost indestructible, as evidenced by centuries-old
streets with clinker surfaces. Clinker
pavement works well on pavements, parking lots, streets, as well as in home
gardens. Paths, terraces or
driveways to the garage made from it blend in perfectly with the surrounding
greenery. When we add the highest
class of clinker's abrasiveness and perpetual guarantee of expressive and warm
color, the choice of material for the surface seems to be sealed ...
We are all not entirely
determined to get acquainted with the objective (created on the basis of Polish
Construction Standard and technical manufacturers' cards) by comparison of
clinker and concrete pavement. We
leave your applications.
Prepared on the basis of
PN-EN 1338: 2005 "Concrete paving blocks, Requirements and test
methods"; PN-EN 1344: 2004
"Ceramic road brick, Requirements and test methods" and technical
sheets of pavement producers.
Lack of resistance of
concrete pavement even to weak acids (lemon slice) causes on its surface
permanent discoloration, and with long enough effect also pitting. The photo shows irremovable stains on
the concrete pavement after a 12-hour test with lemon. Clinker pavement is resistant to this
type of factors, because as a result of thermal treatment it takes on a
non-reactive form.
Concrete pavement due to
the leaky structure of the material is not resistant to oils and other fatty
substances. They sink into its
surface within a few minutes, causing permanent dirt. Clinker pavement after firing gains a
compact, tight structure that guarantees very low absorbability (0.8 - 3.0%),
thanks to which oil does not penetrate into it.
Concrete pavement
undergoes 40 times more abrasion than clinker, because its structure is made of
stone aggregate surrounded by easily abrasive, hardened cement paste (cement +
sand + water). Clinker pavement
is a "sintered" ceramic, in which it is difficult to separate and
detach individual grains, so its abrasiveness is minimal.
