Quiet exterior walls - what to build them for?

Home is an oasis of peace, a place where we rest and enjoy family life. In order not to disturb the noise coming from the street or the neighborhood, it is worth taking care of quiet external walls, distinguished by high acoustic insulation.

If the plot on which the house is to be located is located in a noisy area, eg on a busy street, near the airport or a production plant, special attention should be paid to the acoustic insulation of the walls. Built from appropriate materials, they will not carry annoying sounds.

Recipe for quiet walls

The value of the R'A2 acoustic insulation factor determines the extent to which a given partition is insulated from airborne sounds, which are most often carried by external partitions. The higher it is, the better the outer wall will protect against noise. It is assumed that this indicator for house walls, built in an urbanized area, should be 30-40 dB. Such a good parameter can be obtained by constructing solid, heavy external walls. The heavier the wall, the harder it is to vibrate it. Silent walls should be built in two layers, and as a thermal insulation material, use mineral wool, which is also an effective acoustic isolator. It is also good if the insulation is made using the light dry method, since the boards fixed directly to the masonry may slightly weaken the sound insulation index. If we want even better wall acoustics, you can choose to build them in three layers. In principle, a good acoustic insulation can already provide a suitably made support layer. However, the heat-insulating material, the air emptiness and the cover layer will additionally improve acoustics. Sound waves passing through three different layers will quickly break down and disperse.

Materials for quiet external walls

The best acoustics of external walls will be provided by materials with a large mass, such as traditional ceramics or lime-silicate blocks. If you decide to build walls of ceramic blocks, it is worth paying attention to the location of the gaps in relation to the face of the wall. For the walls to best insulate against noise, the long edge of the openings in the block should be located perpendicular to the face of the wall.

Choosing the right material for the construction of quiet external walls, it is also worth paying attention to the Rw indicator given by the manufacturer. The higher it is, the barrier will sound better. Some manufacturers of building materials, offer products created especially for the good insulation of walls - it is worth reaching for them, building their secluded asylum.
