What and how to paint a heater?

Old, cast iron or steel radiators can be quite efficient and their replacement is not always necessary. However, it is difficult to consider them as a decorative element of the interior. How do you renew them?

Paints for radiators

Hiding old radiators behind heavy curtains or furniture is not a good idea. We limit the flow of heat into the interior. Therefore, if our cast iron radiators do not look their best - it's time to renew them.

What paint to paint radiators?

We can use metal paint, however, pay attention to whether they meet very important parameters. After the first one should have increased resistance to high temperature. Second - do not turn yellow under the influence of heat. Another important feature is the high hiding power and excellent adhesion to substrates.

Information on the parameters of the given paint can be found on the packaging.

Paint manufacturers now offer products designed for painting radiators. These are most often water-borne paints, on an acrylic adhesive, but you can also get acrylic paints fast drying, having excellent coverage properties.

How to prepare heaters for painting?

Before we start painting the radiators, we should prepare the substrate very carefully. It must be dry, vacuumed and degreased. We clean the rust-covered ribs with a wire brush and remove old, flaking paint coats. The rest must be matted with sandpaper and carefully dusted.

Does painting the radiators require priming?

Exposed metal fragments of the radiator should be primed. Anticorrosive primer paints are best suited for this.

Is it possible to paint radiators during the heating season?

Unfortunately, we usually remember about radiators when heating is turned on. Painting hot radiators is not a good idea. The maximum temperature of the substrate for applying paints to heaters is 30 degrees C. Higher causes too fast drying, unevenness is created, and the coating is not durable.

Cast iron radiators are best painted at room temperature, between the two layers leave about 4 hours to dry. Therefore, if we decide now to paint the radiators, turn them on, wait for them to cool down and then put on the paint.

We can activate the radiators after the coating has fully cured, after approx. 24 hours. The exception is fast-drying varnishes - painted radiators can be turned on without having to wait for the coat to dry.
