Decoupage and veneer on damaged kitchen furniture

Under the foreign-sounding name of decoupage is a decorative technique, perfectly suited to the renovation of old furniture. When renovating the kitchen, you can also use the effective veneer. Decorative techniques such as decoupage and decorating interior decoration elements are some of the ways to quickly refresh the appearance of home appliances. If you want to renew your kitchen furniture without replacing the building, it is worth using these methods. A decoupage is a more decorative form, requiring more self-invention. In turn, gluing furniture is a way to obtain a uniform new decorative layer on the entire surface of the furniture. The choice belongs to us.

Decoupage, or class furniture

If you want to give your kitchen furniture a vintage or rustic style, you can choose to decorate them using the decoupage method, which involves sticking cutouts on previously painted surface. It is especially worth to distinguish one of the furniture in this way, for example an old kitchen sideboard or a buffet. This technique can be used to renew kitchen furniture made of wood and wood-based panels. The decors can be both special sheets of rice paper bought in the decoupage store and, for example, paper napkin cutouts.

Self-decoupage

* Decorative napkins, acrylic paint, degreaser, varnish, small brush with a delicate bristle, a wide brush for varnishing, fine-grained abrasive paper, a piece of candle, scissors, a roller with a painting tray and new handles matching the styling will be needed for decoration.

* Before painting, unscrew the handles (if you plan to replace them or do not want to paint them with paint), the furniture should be smoothed with sandpaper, which will allow you to get rid of inequalities. After sanding, all surfaces (except those from fibreboard) are degreased, eg with acetone.

* We can paint the cabinet in this way - by applying paint, we do the same as painting cabinets. If you want to get the effect of aging, painting does not have to be precise. Painted elements can be wiped with a candle, which will help to color and not wipe it when wiping

* When a painted cupboard has to be tried, cut the pattern and glue it with decoupage glue or varnish. We also apply it to the top of the pattern. When the adhesive dries slightly, gently wipe the painted elements of the cabinet with fine-grained abrasive paper

* At the end, you need to paint the cabinet several times with a clear acrylic varnish (from 6 to 12 layers depending on the type of varnish and our preferences). Each layer should be applied after thorough drying of the previous one.

Veneer on the front

A good way to renew the fronts of kitchen cabinets will be to finish them with a new self-adhesive veneer. It resembles wallpaper, but does not require glue (hence the name) and it can be washed many times, which is important in the kitchen. They are usually 45-90 cm wide, which guarantees that the front of the typical kitchen cabinets is glued without the least aesthetic connections. With ease, we also select the pattern and the colors of the cover - there are both color and imitation of the wood, such as oak, walnut, or black-stained pine. They also allow to realize the most sophisticated arrangement. You can give the fronts a drawing of animal skin, dots, stripes, vintage picture, stained glass or forest, trees, flowers or with newspaper or letter imprint. Finished with colorful, multi-colored, patterned veneers, fronts look good, for example, in the lower row of cabinets, when the mountain is much more calm.

We stick the cabinets

* To carefully attach the door, you must remove it. Before proceeding with gluing, the front of the cabinet should be cleaned, degreased and dried, and if its surface is uneven, also be smoothed with sandpaper, which will ensure longer durability of the veneer. If the cabinet is covered with old, peeling paint, it should also be sanded. Wood surfaces must also be primed, eg with an acrylic primer.

* When the furniture is ready to apply the veneer, we can proceed to cut it. This will not cause any problems, because the veneer's bottom is divided into half-centimeter grids. The veneer should be cut with a margin of about 6 cm six centimeters.

* We gradually take off the paper protecting the veneer and arrange the veneer evenly from the top of the front. It should ideally adhere to the plane, so that there are no air bubbles under the veneer, because they will cause it to peel off, therefore the surfaces to be glued must be smoothed all the time. You can use the squeegee for water. Remember to wrap the edges and corners of the furniture with the supply. Excess veneer can be removed with a wallpaper cutter. The edges of the veneer should be painted with a clear varnish, which will minimize the risk of peeling off.

* If you notice air bubbles after sticking, you need to punch them with a needle and squeeze.
